It’s official, thanks to inflation and increases in ticket prices due to 3D, James Cameron’s Avatar has surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic as the top grossing movie of all time. That’s right, the highest two grossing films of all time were both directed by James Cameron. Although when adjusting for inflation, Gone With the Wind is still the highest with a $400 million worldwide gross in 1939 translating to $6 billion today. Summit Entertainment announced today that The Twilight Saga: New Moon broke the midnight box office record by bringing in $26 million from 3,514 theaters last night at 12:01 a.m. The second installment of the Twilight series easily beat the $22 million midnight record previously held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and last year’s The Dark Knight, which made $18 million.

Nobody saw this one coming, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price broke the midnight release box office record held by last summer’s blockbuster (greatest movie ever) The Dark Night. The Half-Blood Prince made over $20 million at its midnight opening, edging out The Dark Night which previously held the title at $18 million.
