For the past two years, there have been rumors as to whether the role of the Joker would be re-cast so the character could return in Batman 3 after Heath Ledger’s untimely death and Oscar winning performance in The Dark Knight. Many believed that Johnny Depp would be a good choice as a potential re-cast while others argued that it would be in bad taste to have the Joker return so soon after Ledgers epic portrayal of Batman’s nemesis. Those rumors can now be put to rest as Christopher Nolan has broken his silence on the subject when asked if we’ll see the Joker again:

“No”, says Nolan emphatically and unhesitatingly. He resists elaborating simply because, quite understandably, he says, “I just don’t feel comfortable talking about it”.

So there you have, no Joker in Batman 3. Now the real question is what villain(s) will we see in the upcoming sequel to The Dark Knight?

Warner Bros. has officially announced that the sequel to The Dark Knight and third Batman film by Christopher Nolan will be released on July 20, 2012. While there are still no details about the plot or what the name might possibly be, THR is reporting:

“The studio has barely begun the process of developing the movie; Christopher Nolan is in postproduction on “Inception,” but is hammering out a story with David Goyer.”

With both Nolan and Goyer already signed on, the third installment in the series may have a chance at being even more successful than The Dark Knight. However, it’s a ballsy move by Warner Bros. to set Batman 3 for release in the summer of 2012 with The Avengers on May 4th, Star Trek 2 on June 29th and the Spider-Man reboot on July 3rd. With so many big budget action movies set for release it the summer of 2012, it will be exciting to see which movies stick to their release dates and who will emerge as the highest grossing film.

One of the biggest surprises of this years Spike Video Game Awards (besides that they actually picked the right Game of the Year) was the announcement that after just releasing Batman: Arkham Asylum back in August, Rocksteady Studios has already starting working on a sequel. It was officially announced during the beginning of the show with a trailer showing a sickly Joker recovering from the events of the first game in a rundown carnival. Gotham City is also shown in the trailer with the tag-line “Arkham Has Moved.” Hit the jump for the full trailer.

Our Review: 4.5 out of 5
Game Length: Around 12 hours
Credits Length: N/A
Are the extra scenes after the credits worth sticking around for?

During the Credits

There are black and white illustrations of the characters shown.

After the Credits (spoilers)

There are multiple random extra scenes that are shown after the credits. The extra scene starts off with Batman flying away in the Batwing as the camera then tilts down to show a hand reaching out of the water. While the scene begins the same, the hand is random and is either the hand of Bane, Killer Croc or Scarecrow.

Special thanks to JENSEN and xMort for the stinger submissions!

Considering its Michael Phelps-style smashing of numerous records, chances are you’ve already seen The Dark Knight… more than once. And why not? The Batman Begins sequel, which follows the conflicted vigilante’s descent in Gotham’s public eye and his arch nemesis’ parallel rise atop the city’s underworld, demands multiple viewings for plenty of reasons. The most popular one, I’m sure you’ve heard by now, is the brilliant and unforgettable performance by Heath Ledger, who crawls under your skin and is sure to be Oscar-nominated at least. While his instantly legendary portrayal of The Joker garners endless and well-deserved buzz, don’t count out Aaron Eckhart’s masterful supporting turn either. The beautiful movie is gripping right off the bat, but its greatest feat may be that even after an enthralling ride that clocks in at 2 ½ hours, it still leaves you wanting more, immediately as the credits roll. As the box office behemoth begins to lift its threat of sinking Titanic’s domestic gross mark, now’s the perfect time to re-catch the only major feature film partially shot using IMAX cameras. Aside from the occasional cheeseball one-liner and Christian Bale’s… interesting Batman voice, The Dark Knight reigns over this summer with near perfection.
