Having delivered the surprising Dawn of the Dead remake and the massively popular 300, director Zack Snyder completes the hat trick with Watchmen, the first excellent film of the year. Based on the groundbreaking ‘80s comic book series, the film adeptly explores the issues and repercussions of superheroes and vigilantes living integrated in society, much like Spider-Man 2 and The Dark Knight did so well. Even with the wistfully absorbing soundtrack and explosive visuals, Snyder’s greatest feat is condensing the story to half its length while retaining the commentary that made the original graphic novel so remarkable. Although the adaptation stays mostly true to the source material, the changes are welcome ones, like the extended action sequences that are stylized like 300’s. The only difference that seems to be turning off both guys AND girls is that big, blue… distraction.
