The last few movies with “vs.” in their titles were not good (Alien vs. Predator), just bad (Freddy vs. Jason), or downright ugly (Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever). DreamWorks’ latest, Monsters vs. Aliens, can rest easily however as the studio’s latest cash cow.

Despite featuring delightful 3D computer animation and quality voice work from Reese Witherspoon and the now-ubiquitous Seth Rogan, Monsters vs. Aliens is more like the decent but disappointing Shrek the Third and Shark Tale and less like its recent blockbusters Kung Fu Panda and the Madagascar sequel. It doesn’t help that the film has a forgettable villain, a nonexistent overall message, and only the occasional clever joke aimed beyond pre-teens. Monsters vs. Aliens is better than other family fare currently out there (like Race to Witch Mountain), but adults should look to I Love You, Man for real comedy.
