Following Bangkok Dangerous, Nicolas Cage and his inexplicable haircut are back in another average-at-best movie. In Knowing, Cage plays a professor who discovers an ominous transcription written a half century ago that has correctly predicted numeric details of all the catastrophic events since. Knowing boasts memorable disaster scenes, including a stunning continuous take reminiscent of the impressive multi-minute shots in Children of Men. However, the film barely knows itself and seems to suffer from an identity crisis as it vacillates between horror and thriller throughout the first hour before finally deciding in the unintelligible third act that it’s actually science fiction. By then, you’ll be either extremely frustrated or confused, possibly both. If you really want to play prophet and avert a future disaster, ask yourself whether you should watch Knowing and the answer will reveal itself within the title, between “K” and “wing.” You’re welcome.
