The biggest movie of the year so far, buttressed by a mammoth box office draw, offers what you would expect from a solid family film, especially a computer animated one. While the jokes are hit-or-miss and some of the voice casting is questionable (did they try to squeeze in as many recognizable comedians as possible?), Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! boasts colorful imagery and, for the most part, characters that are just as vibrant. The highlights include Jim Carrey and Will Arnett’s infusion of personality into their roles and the Seussification of Horton’s jungle, digital eye candy for all ages. Along with some significant changes to the original 1970 TV special, this amounts to a welcome upgrade that maintains but dials down the not-so-subtle philosophical themes. The final product is a visual treat that provides a means to a great escape.
