Despite positive feedback from pre-screenings and overall good reviews (our review here), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World got its ass kicked by The Expendables at this weekend’s box office. Seems like the old action stars still got it with Sylvester Stallone’s Expendables pulling in a solid $35 million and opening #1 at this weekend’s box office, while Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim bombed by only bringing in $10 million and debuted at #5.

Speaking of kicking ass, Matthew Vaughn’s comic book adaptation Kick-Ass only opened to $20 million its first weekend back in April, and was believed to be somewhat of a failure at the box office. Many industry analyst believed the PG-13 Scott Pilgrim would trump Miller’s film due to Kick-Ass‘ R-rating which prevented the younger audience who it was directly marketed to from the seeing the film. But it looks like the PG-13 rating didn’t help Pilgrim at the box office and the teenagers who it was targeted towards were all still on vacation. Check out the top 10 movies at this weekend’s box office below.

After the success of Neil Blomkamp’s low budget sci-fi thriller “District 9″ last summer, it was only a matter of time before the alien-based genre started to swarm the movie industry again. With other alien-based thrillers in development like J.J. Abrams’ “Super 8″ and “Battle: Los Angeles”, we have another contender for the next big alien-based sci-fi thriller entitled “Skyline” which focuses more on what District 9 didn’t — the actual event of an alien invasion. Skyline‘s trailer debuted at this year’s Comic-Con and has finally made its way on to the internet.

Skyline is from directors Colin and Greg Strause (Aliens vs Predator – Requiem) and stars Donald Faison, Eric Balfour, David Zayas, Scottie Thompson, and Brittany Daniel. Set for release this year on November 12th, Skyline is described as:

Strange lights descend on the city of Los Angeles, drawing people outside like moths to a flame where an extraterrestrial force threatens to swallow the entire human population off the face of the Earth.

Well it’s finally happened, after three weeks of being #1 at the box office, Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece Inception has been beat by Adam McKay’s cop comedy The Other Guys. It’s really no surprise, as Inception‘s numbers have been slowly declining since its release, and The Other Guys is receiving much praise from critics who are saying is Will Ferrell’s best comedy since Anchorman.

This time back in 2008, Nolan’s The Dark Knight was still going strong and #1 for the fourth week in a row at the box office. While Inception is far from Batman‘s four week total of $450 million, Inception‘s $227 million is still a huge success for Nolan, who can now focus on directing the third installment in the Batman series. Check out the top 10 movies at this weekend’s box office below.

Movie news has been terribly slow since Comic-Con ended. The only stories worth talking about are trailers that were exclusively shown at Comic-Con and found their way on to the internet; unfortunately, those trailers (Thor) have all been quickly taken down by request of the production studios. But with slow news weeks comes the discovery of hidden gems on sites like YouTube, which feature hilarious user-created mashups of classic movies with unlikely cameos and alternate versions.

YouTube user Peatman is the genius behind the idea of taking clips of Star Wars with Darth Vader and replacing James Earl Jones’ voice with classic sound clips of Arnold Schwarzenegger. As a result, we get Darth Schwarzenegger, and pure awesomeness. The only problem with the user-made clip, is that it’s not long enough, we need an entire Star Wars with Arnold soundboards dubbed over the original voice acting! Here’s a description from the creator:

An earlier casting of Star Wars IV: A New Hope saw Arnold Schwarzenegger put a juvenile, jealous and rather perverted spin on Darth Vader’s explosive personality. George Lucas had second thoughts and cast James Earl Jones instead. Enjoy these exclusive clips from the “lost tapes” archives of Skywalker Ranch.

The same Thor trailer shown exclusively during Marvel’s panel at Comic-Con last weekend, has already made its way on to the internet. Set for release on May 6, 2011, Thor will be the next movie in the Avengers franchise and will take place right where Iron Man 2‘s extra scene after the credits left off.

Thor is being directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars: Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg, and Colm Feore. Here’s an synopsis from an official Marvel press release:

The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment.

After viewing the the trailer for Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi action flick “Sucker Punch” from this year’s Comic-Con, all I can say is that I have no idea what I just watched, but I do know that it looked awesome, just like director Zack Snyder’s previous films 300 and Watchmen. But unlike 300 and Watchmen where Snyder just directed, he will be both writing and directing Sucker Punch. Set for release March 25, 2011, Sucker Punch stars: Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn, and Oscar Isaac. For everyone else who had no idea what was going on in the trailer, here’s a synopsis from Snyder:

Set in the 1950s, [Sucker Punch] tells the story of Baby Doll (Browning), who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and lobotomy. She ends up in mental institution in Brattleboro, Vermont and while there she starts to imagine alternative reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is caught by a vile man. She has 5 days to escape before being lobotomized. In order to cope with the situation, she enters the hyper-real world of her imagination, and the lines between reality and dream begin to blur. She is joined with friends who are inmates from the institution. Lessons learned in the said fantasy world could help the girls escape their real-world fate.

After rumors of Edward Norton getting into disputes with the producers over what scenes should make the final cut in 2008′s Incredible Hulk remake, there has been tons of speculation over whether Norton would reprise his role as the Hulk in the upcoming Avengers movies, set for release over the next couple years. That speculation can now be laid to rest after Marvel had the stars of the upcoming Avengers series make an appearance at the end of this year’s Captain America and Thor Comic-Con panel.

Marvel announced that Norton is no longer attached to the series, and Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac) is officially the new Bruce Banner aka the Incredible Hulk. In addition to Marvel’s announcement about Mark Ruffalo being cast as the new Hulk, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) also made it up on stage to confirm that he will be playing another one of Marvel’s superheros, Hawkeye.

He even had a scene in 2003′s The Rundown where Arnold Schwarzenegger made a cameo and hinted that he was passing the “action hero” torch to Johnson. But after a couple good action movies, Johnson has yet to make another, and instead has been starring in PG children’s movies like The Tooth Fairy and The Game Plan. Seems like The Rock is just as tired of making movies for kiddies, as we are of watching them, and is finally getting back to his action genre roots. “Faster” starring Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton is an action movie for adults, set for release this November. Here’s the official synopsis:

After 10 years in prison, Driver has a singular focus – to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his imprisonment. Now a free man with a deadly to-do list in hand, he’s finally on his mission… but with two men on his trail – a veteran cop just days from retirement, and a young egocentric hitman with a flair for the art of killing and a newfound worthy opponent. The hunter is also the hunted. It’s a do or die race to the list’s finish as the mystery surrounding his brother’s murder deepens, and new details emerge along the way hinting that Driver’s list may be incomplete.

After two teaser trailers that didn’t show any actual footage from the movie, we finally have an official trailer for David Fincher’s upcoming movie based on everyone’s favorite social networking site, Facebook. Entitled “The Social Network”, Fincher’s film is said to paint the founder of Facebook in a very unfaltering way and tell the story behind how Mark Zuckerberg founded the site while attending Harvard University, and the legal battles that began after the site’s initial success. Starring Jessie Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield and Rashida Jones, The Social Network looks to be a great drama that focuses on the real issues that come with the success of becoming the world’s younger billionaire.
